Sax in a Kayak
A lot of the family know that 4 months ago when my back was sore from kayaking I started thinking about a sedentary hobby, After several weeks of pondering I found a tutor and rented an alto saxophone. When I looked at it before my first lesson I had no idea how to pick it up without damaging it. and could barely tell A from B let alone a # from a flat.
However having got started I have become very enthusiastic and am thoroughly enjoying myself. Vivien went to Newfoundland for the first couple of weeks when I started so that she did not have to suffer the sound of a Canada goose being strangled.
However I have kept practicing and practicing and practicing, and slowly improving. Vivien reckons I have put one year of practice into 4 months.
Today I did my first public performance, a solo in church. I would not have chosen to do it quite so soon in my playing career and there is a bit of a story behind it.
David Kocijan is a sax player in Croatia and plays the most beautiful gospel music (https://www.youtube.com/user/David987987) , I discovered he is doing a tour of churches in the USA and asked if he had any plans to come to Atlantic Canada, the answer was no but he would come if invited. I discussed this with our pastor, Wade. Wade's reservation was that some of our congregation have not been very accepting of new ideas for music in the church and the sax is associated with jazz not church music. He told me I had to play first and see what the reaction was. Any way I did my solo and it seems to have been well accepted and although I was so nervous ( I think I would have rather been in my kayak in 20knots and 6 ft waves) every note was full of vibrato but all have told me it sounded good and have been very encouraging.
I was not able to record what I did during the service but afterwards I stayed to practice and did record the piece to my phone. Here is a link to it.
