Nic and I had a mini-break in Mavora this weekend.
Nic has been working really hard, with a lot of time away from home doing locums.
Tim and Jo (and Ollie, Hamish and Meg-the-dog) had been planning a weekend in Mavora, and this was the only weekend we could join them, due to other commitments.
Logistics got a little awkward as Nic was working in Queenstown until midday Friday. Tim and Joe were going in on Thursday. Douglas couldn't join us as he was working all weekend, and of course he needed one of the cars to get to work (it's 18km, which is a little far to bike at midnight)
So I arranged to borrow George's Landrover. Tim and Jo took the canoe on their Peugeot on Thursday evening. I took all our stuff in the Landy, on Friday morning, and set up our camp (we have a big Vango tent now for Glamping trips) and then in the evening drove out to the main road (30 mins of dirt road) to meet Nicky in the Landy, so the Peugeot didn't have to negotiate the dirt road.
We had a lovely relaxing weekend. It was too hot to do anything too energetic. Late starts on both days. Nic and I went for a nice walk on Sat afternoon whilst Tim and the boys drifted down the river in their wet-suits. Jo misplaced her bike gloves, so I borrowed Tim's bike and went looking for them. Found them exactly where she thought she had left them, so then I did a bit of off-track playing and found a big patch of snow-berries (very tasty, edible, white alpine berries). Bike back to camp to get a container and went back with Hamish to collect some in a bag. We got quite a bowl full in only about 30 minutes.
On Sunday Nic and I played on the lake in the canoe whilst the Mann's went off to build a "den" and have a snack in the den. Tim tried fishing both days but had no luck.
The Landrover was great fun. George had originally offered me his more modern 4wd, as he thought I would be deaf with an injured spine by the time I got to Mavora in the Landy, but he exaggerated. It was excellent fun. Looks the part much more than a modern 4wd too!
The night skies were great. Very clear skies, and had loads of shooting stars on Friday night too.
Jo was working Monday morning, so the Mann's had to leave on Sunday night. Nic had been away from home over a week by that time, so we decided to leave too, even though originally we had intended to stay until Monday.
Just as well we did. When we got home and back into "connection", I got a bit of a shock. Checking messages, I discovered I had agreed to work (for T&T) on Monday too!
